1. Funeral Arrangements

   One of the first decisions is whether the funeral will be a burial or a cremation, and where the service will be held. That may be a church or place of worship, a crematorium, the graveside, or somewhere else that feels right. For a cremation, some families hold a church service followed by a shorter service at the crematorium chapel.

   We listen carefully to your wishes, help you through the difficult choices, liaise with third parties, and take care of the details so the day runs as smoothly as possible.

2. Coffins & Urns

   We offer a range of coffins and urns, from traditional wooden coffins to wicker or cardboard options. Coffins can include paintings and designs if you want to personalise the ceremony further.

   Families sometimes place letters, photos, or a small memento in the coffin. We will advise you on what is practical.

3. Music & Hymns

   We can advise on music for the service and make the arrangements. Recorded music is often used instead of, or alongside, traditional hymns and organ music. Live music is also possible, such as a piper or brass band.

   If the service is in a church, some ministers only allow traditional music and hymns. Most crematoria hold large music collections and will usually allow you to provide your own recording. Let us know your choices early and we will organise them.

4. Poems, Readings & Eulogies

   A friend or relative may wish to say a few words during the service. That is called a eulogy. You can write one yourself, or choose a favourite poem or reading instead.

   We can help you decide what feels right and how it fits into the order of service.

5. Obituary Notices

   We can help you write and place death announcements and acknowledgements in local or national newspapers. Papers often have their own rules on length and style, and we can advise on wording and cost.

   A notice commonly includes the person's name, when and how they died, close family relationships, funeral arrangements, and whether flowers or charitable donations are preferred.

6. Transport

   The usual choice is a motorised hearse, with limousines for close family and friends. Other options can include a traditional horse-drawn hearse, a motorcycle hearse, or a 4x4 hearse.

   We will advise on availability, practicality and cost. The hearse and following cars form the cortege. If you want a particular route that passes a place of significance, we can arrange that.

7. Viewing the Deceased

   Some people find it comforting to see the person who has died, and to bring a small gift or photograph for the coffin. Others find it upsetting. It is a personal choice, and we aim to help either way.

   Family and friends can visit in our private chapel at Alexander House by appointment, day or night, without an extra charge.

8. Coffin Bearers

   You will need to decide who carries the coffin. Friends or relatives can do this, or we can provide bearers.

   If you have not done it before, we will talk you through what happens so you feel prepared on the day.

9. Floral Tributes & Donations

   We can help you order funeral flowers, from coffin sprays and wreaths to more personal designs, and we can collect or record the card messages for you. Some families ask for family flowers only. If tributes are brought to the service, we can advise on what happens to them afterwards, including donation to a local hospital, hospice or nursing home where that is possible.

   Many families prefer charitable donations instead of flowers. You can choose one charity or more than one. We can help you set that up.

10. Order of Service Sheets

    Order of service sheets can set out the ceremony and include a few words about the person who has died, with a photograph or another meaningful image.

    We can print personalised sheets for you and advise on layout. Many families keep them as a keepsake, or send them to people who could not attend.

What to do when someone dies in Grimsby

Losing a loved one is a deeply emotional time, and it can be difficult to know what to do next. We are here to guide you through the practical steps, taking as much of the burden as we can so you can focus on your family.

• Register the Death

  In most cases you need to register the death within five days, ideally at the register office for the area where the person died. If a coroner is involved, you will be told when to register.

  A relative, someone present at the death, someone who lived in the same house, or the person arranging the funeral (not the funeral director) can usually register. Take the medical certificate showing the cause of death, and be ready with details such as the person's full name, date and place of birth, occupation, and marital status.

  The registrar will give you a Certificate of Registration of Death and a green Certificate for Burial or Cremation, which you should pass to us as soon as you can. Certified copies are available for a fee if you need them for banks, insurers or pensions.

• Care for the Deceased

  Once you entrust your loved one to us, we look after them with respect until the funeral. They can also rest at home or in church if that is allowed and preferred.

  We wash and dress everyone in our care. Many families provide a favourite outfit. We often recommend embalming if you want to visit in the chapel of rest, because it slows the natural changes after death. If you would like to help with any of this care yourself, tell us.

• Viewing

  Some people find it comforting to see the person who has died. Others do not. There is no right answer. If you wish to visit, we provide a private chapel of rest at Alexander House by appointment.

  There are many organisations to contact after a death. GOV.UK's Tell Us Once service can notify several government departments in one go. You may still need to contact others directly. This checklist covers the main ones:

  • Car insurance (urgent if anyone was driving under the deceased's policy)
  • Home insurance, to keep cover in place
  • Banks and building societies
  • Credit card and store card companies
  • Employer and any trade union
  • HMRC
  • Pension providers, life assurance, and occupational pensions (the Pension Tracing Service can help if you are unsure)
  • Social Security / DWP if benefits were paid into an account
  • Local council for housing benefit, council tax support, or rented housing
  • Landlord, if the home was rented privately
  • Social Services, if home help or day care was in place
  • GP, and any hospital the person was attending
  • Private health insurance
  • Gas, electricity, water, phone and broadband suppliers
  • Clubs, professional associations and memberships
  • School or college, if a child or young person has lost someone close
  • Royal Mail redirection, if you want post redirected
  • Milk or newspaper deliveries, gardener, window cleaner, and booked appointments
  • Refunds that may be due on items such as a TV licence, vehicle tax, council tax or season tickets
  • Savings certificates, Premium Bonds and share certificates, where relevant
